What’s Lurking in Your Toothbrush

How many of us finally shake that cold to find it rears its ugly head a week later? We tend to think that we have picked up a second bug and blame our compromised immune system when in reality we could well have picked up exactly the same bug as the first time around from an extremely unlikely source; our toothbrush.

Yes you read that correctly, our toothbrush harbours the nasties that are transferred from our mouths when we have a cold, and when we continue to use the same brush after the cold has gone, they germs are still lurking there amongst the bristles waiting to re-infect us.

Most of us know that we should replace our toothbrush every 3 months, but they should also be replaced after we have recovered from a cold. To get the message out there, dental experts Colgate have released a video that while isn’t exactly pleasant, certainly makes its point and now everyone who is suffering from a cold or the flu should ditch that old brush and open a brand new one as soon as the cold has gone.

The video shows a man, who we later discover is called Dave, brushing his teeth and then leaving his brush on the side of the sink ready for next time. As the camera zooms in on the bristles several beasties emerge from the bristles and berate Dave for being so as unaware as he is, is still using a toothbrush full of bugs that he has put there.

The message is clear and succinct; any kind of germ or bug should result in your throwing away that old toothbrush and replacing it with one that is beastie free. Even if you haven’t had it for three months, you really can’t compare the price of a toothbrush against how lousy you will feel by that cold re-occurring so quickly.
