Horse meat scandal set to escalate

Environment secretary, Owen Paterson, stated that new tests show that a horse drug called pehnylbutazone that may be present in horse meat is potentially dangerous to the health of humans if consumed. He also told the public that they should expect more ‘bad news’ as the week goes on.

Paterson stated that international criminal conspiracy might be the reason that horse meat was able to get into processed food items, but he said that the ministerial team is still investigating how the horse meat crisis came to be.

As part of his interview he stated that they may find out that the results of further drug tests are even worse. At the moment however they do not have evidence that this is true, and instead they are looking at the horse meat crisis as a labeling issue.

The remarks made by Paterson are the first time that the government has acknowledged that there may be a health threat attached to the discovery of food that was labeled as beef but in fact contained horse meat instead.

The Food Standards Agency is doing a serious of testing to ascertain if the horse drug is actually in the horse meat. Meat that has any trace of this drug is not allowed to be part of the human food chain.

Paterson warned that right now they do not know how far this conspiracy may lead but if they find that they need to in the interest of public health they will ban the import of processed meat. UK authorities have already spoken with the French Police to look into Comigel procedures which is the French plant that produced the lasagna that had horse meat inside of it.
