New facility in Belfast aims to improve cancer treatment

With the aim to improve the health of thousands of people inflicted by cancer, an innovative cancer research and curing facility will open at Queen’s University in Belfast. The said laboratory, which was made possible by the tie-up of Belfast Health and Trust for Social Care and Queen’s Centre of Cancer Research and Cell Biology, is considered to be the first in Ireland and UK.

Both the Northern Ireland Biobank (NIB) and North Ireland Molecular Pathology Laboratory (NI-MPL) can result to better analysis of cancer through tumour samples examination at a molecular state. The facility will also pave way to personalized treatment and advancement of research about cancer.

Manuel Salto-Tellez, a Professor of Molecular Pathology at Queen’s Island and Head Researcher in NI-MPL affirmed that analysing the tumour samples at molecular levels will observe the changes happening in an individual’s genes. The advanced NIB will also give researchers more access to human blood samples and tissues.

The Scientific Director of NIB, Jackie James, also lauded the new facility, by saying that the pathological information and medical materials it can provide will paved a way to the more meaningful and deeper research.

According to Professor Nic Jones, Chief Scientist of the Cancer Research in UK, the improved facility, which made scientists, doctors, and patients work hand-in-hand to devise a treatment for cancer in Northern Ireland, will be a good example to the world.

Jones also emphasized the crucial role of Cancer Research in the establishment of NIB. The professor stated that UK’s Cancer Research gave support to the scientists who are expert in examining tissue that allows them to segregate patients into different groups. This resulted to the discovery of the effective cure that fits to the patient’s individual DNA.

Moreover, Professor Jones disclosed that the whole team, he included, believe that having a research that is globally-competitive will increase the survival chance of cancer patients and will become a lubricant for research progress.
