Antibiotics being over-prescribed leads to patients becoming immune to their effects

There is a rising trend of using antibacterial agents against bacterial and infection resistance in the United Kingdom. The medical centres of the country are making plans to format annual audits for the welfare of public. This practice is proposed to control the unnecessary usage of antibiotics. Through check-and-balance, the system will ensure that bacterial resistant medications are used wisely and legally to boost bacterial resistance.

Critical step is taken after Dame Sally Davis, CMO UK, warns that intake of these antibiotic is one of the greatest menaces of present times. It will also impact the environment of modern healthcare system.

To create awareness, The RCGP had recently contributed in Antibiotic Awareness day which held last weekend. They prepared posters, leaflets, and theme of audit report to set out their practices against crucial danger of throat infections. This effort was to warn people as what these antibiotics could do when taken without prescription.

The HP and Antimicrobial Stewardship created a tool kit which constitutes three parts; treating antibiotics, guidelines, and education on usage. Champion of Antimicrobial stewardship Michael Moore stated that this tool kit will be helpful for the practices and they will be able to reduce prescribing antibiotics to their patients, certainly.

He said that practices will consider it as an important issue and integrate antibiotic awareness into their programmes, perhaps over the course of coming years according to different cases and condition of patients.

Dr Cliodna McNulty stated that the prescribing of bacterial resistance drugs and medications is very limited yet use of overall antibiotic medication is surging with the passage of time. These medications should only be prescribed to the patient when there is an utmost need for it and if it’s the only way to mitigate the chances of emerging bacterial infection or disease.
