Working all day on laptops and tablets can be bad for your health

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy has recently issued a statement saying that people who work on laptops, tablets, or smart phones, after hours are risking their health. The Society have described these people as becoming ‘screen slaves’ as they continue to work on their commute or even after they have come home.

The health risks come from the poor posture which these environments tend to foster and ultimately this can lead to neck and back pain for the individuals who spend too much time working in front of their electronic devices. The Society have urged people to turn off such things when they leave the office so the body can get the rest that it needs.

Over 2000 individuals were involved in the survey which was conducted online and it showed that nearly 70 percent of them continued to do some sort of work on their devices once they have left the office. It was shown that on average people spend an additional two hours each day, after work, doing some sort of work on their computers.

The Society suggested to people that if they are having problems getting away from their work then they should talk to their managers about being allowed to switch off their mobile phones when they leave the office.

Dr Helena Johnson is the chairwoman of the Society and she is stated, “These survey results are something the concern us a great deal. It is important that people don’t make this sort of work a part of their routine in the evening.

“Not only can it lead to physical problems such as neck and back pain, but it can also lead people to develop stress-related conditions. If you are feeling under pressure it is important that you discuss this stress with your employer so that you can resolve the issue before it becomes a major health concern.”
