People brought to the hospital with alcohol problems is twice as many as 2002, reaching over one million.

Over ten million British adults about 25%, drink above the daily recommended limits.

Over 2.5 million of the 10 million drink more than double the recommended amount or about three pints of beer for men and four glasses of wine for women.

Alcohol Concern says the NHS has spent large sums to help with smoking and drug use but has been shameful with the alcohol related problems.

They are asking for A&E to appoint workers to diagnose problem drinkers and refer them for treatment. Alcohol Concern says governments have failed in the drinking problems of the country and say billions can be saved by having alcohol health workers located in hospitals to advise patients on how to lower their drinking

A three fold savings will be realised by just a small investment. Alcohol is second behind smoking for risk of mouth and throat cancers.

Over 15,000 deaths were directly related to alcohol is 2008. Making drunks pay for hospital treatment can be a deterrent for them to drink says the president of the College of Emergency Medicine. It should not be underestimated the difficulties that are posed by these patients.

A smooth a safe run department is the goal and there needs to be a strategy to get there. People are claiming that hospitals are clogged with drunks and other patients are suffering from not be attended to on a timely fashion.

A new survey from Prima magazine and the British Liver Trust found that one in three women over the age of 35 consumes more alcoholic drinks then they did during their teens. Out of those surveyed an additional one in five respondent over the age of 35 admitted to regularly partaking in binge drinking.

The results came along with a new study by the Department of Health that found lifestyle diseases are on the rise in stunning rates.
In fact, the study found that deaths that are caused by liver disease in England are not only increasing, but are above the average across Europe.

According to the former study, conducted by the British Liver Trust, the most popular drink among the women surveyed was wine, although 66% of those surveyed could not name how many units of wine were in one glass. Traditionally, a 250ml glass of wine will have three units of alcohol although the figure can vary by strength.

Chief executive of the British Liver Trust, Alison Rogers, stated that the survey offered evidence to what the Trust already believed was true, that most people in the key age group are unaware of the units of alcohol that they consume on a regular basis. Rogers also stated that as supermarkets encourage bulk purchasing one of ten respondents do not allow their liver a day off from drinking.

She added that it is at least safe to state that most women over the age of 35 are still part of the ‘binge drinking’ scene although a few do still pertain in the culture.
