Related posts brought to you by Yet Another Related Posts Plugin.]]> An independent review is being initiated with regard to organ donations after the NHS transplant authority confirmed that there have been 21 cases in which surgeons removed the wrong organs from respective donors.

It is possible that up to 800,000 people who are listed on the UK donor registry have had their preferences regarding which organs can be denoted incorrectly recorded.

Donations from those who may have had their wishes misinterpreted have been put on hold temporarily.  Andy Burnham, the Health Secretary, stated that he was sorry the error was made but hopes it will not deter people from donating.

The British Medical Association is concerned that public confidence may be swayed by the dilemma.

According to the NHS Blood and Transplant only people who live in England, Scotland, and Wales that are registered as donors via their driving licence application form may be affected.

Burnham reassured the public that a system has been initiated in order to prevent the problem from ever occurring again.

The major problem concerns tissue donations involving organs such as eyes, as over 17m of those affected gave consent for all organs to be used while others have requested that organs like eyes not be donated.

However, for the past ten years due to a technical error some of the listed preferences were recorded wrong which was noted in 2009 when the NHS Blood and Transplant wrote to donors in order to confirm their donor preferences.  At the time many donors wrote that the information was not correct.
