Many GP’s thinks that this idea will be disloyal to them and due to this reason they are not supporting this idea. Most people who have private medical insurance decide to go with NHS for pre-planned operations despite paying out for insurance. The Laing & Buisson firm recently released a report according to which the NHS spends nearly 1 billion pounds per year in order to cover treatments that could be sponsored by the private medical insurance. Approximately 360 million pounds are spent on operations which are pre-planned – this was stated by the operator of 6 private hospitals, HCA International. It was also suggested that all GP’s should ask their patients if they are considering the possibility of undergoing pre-planned operations or not. Plus, the hospital staff will have the chance to ask all of the cases considered as emergencies whether or not the people want switching to private wards. According to Dr. Gerada, people who are using their cover have their premiums increased. She also said that the reason that the NHS is still the first choice of many is due to the amount of people it treats successfully, which effectively removes some of the fear. Dr Natalie MacDonald, director of Bupa Health and Wellbeing said they want all of their members to get value from their PMI and this is why we are encouraging them to use their policy.
