Yellow markings on the eyelids may indicate heart risk

A recent study in Denmark has said that people who display xanthelasmata, which are yellow markings on the eyelids, are more likely to suffer from illness and even have a heart attack. The study is published in the BMJ and has said that those displaying this yellowing are 50% more likely to suffer a heart attack.

Cardiologists are saying that this will help doctors notice people who are at risk from a heart attack. The condition is caused because of fatty build ups and indicates that there could be build ups in other parts of the body as well.

The study was conducted at the Herlev Hospital and has been going on for the last forty years. It found that of nearly 13,000 patients, those who had the yellow marking were the ones most likely to have medical complications. It showed that as well as an increase in heart attack risk there was also an increased in the prevalence of heart disease and death.

The data indicated that if you have xanthelasmata then you have a 20% chance of developing heart disease in the next five years. The authors of the study said that patients showing the condition should make immediate changes to the lifestyle.

Currently, many people with the condition will seek out the help of a dermatologist because they do not like the appearance of the yellow marks. These people are not being treated for the increased risk of heart attack and disease that they have. Doctors should be using this indicator to offer more effective treatments to patients. The British Heart Foundation commented, “This is an important technique for identifying at risk patients.”
