Vitamin B could help with Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease could be slowed down or even stopped by using Vitamin B tablets daily, according to a British study. According to the research, regularly ingesting significant doses of a Vitamin B supplement could cut the speed of brain shrinkage in half

Many elderly people experience dementia or memory loss, but with this study’s results, it seems that new treatments could soon be formed. The scientists who worked on the study believe that the results could be revolutionary in aiding further research of the disease.

Atrophy, also known as brain shrinkage, often occurs as people get older. However, for people who suffer from Alzheimer’s or Mild Cognitive Impairment, the condition can accelerate.

The study, from scientists at the University of Oxford, looked at how Vitamin B could affect 168 people. The scientists found that with three supplements of Vitamin B each day, levels of brain shrinkage from dementia was decreased by over 50 percent.

Based on the results of the study, some are now suggesting that everyone who develops Mild Cognitive Impairment should be prescribed the tablets. About half of all Alzheimer’s patients develop the condition, and over 15 percent of people over the age of seventy have the impairment in Britain.

David Smith is a pharmacologist and a professor, and he co-authored the study. Smith says that the study’s results are “immensely promising”, stating that the vitamins can simply “protect the brain”, and that the study’s results will “change the whole direction of Alzheimer’s research”.
