Diabetes patients do not tell anyone, including the doctor

Close to 33% of all people with diabetes hide the condition and may delay testing or miss insulin injections a Diabetes UK survey suggests. To mark Diabetes Week four thousand diabetics were surveyed and 34% said they hide their diabetes or have at least done so at some point in their life.

There are close to 3 million with diabetes in the UK it means close to a million may be covering up the condition. Many delay testing and miss insulin injections to avoid bringing attention upon themselves.

Younger people are the ones more likely to keep it under wraps with 48% from 17 to 21 years old saying they did. Close to half of the age groups said hiding the condition has caused how they manage the condition and 39% said it affected their emotions or health.

Of those that kept it under wraps 59% did so at work but over half (56%) even kept it a secret from friends. They used reasons such as not wanting it to affect employment and they think others will always say the condition is due to a bad diet.  The Diabetes UK chief executive said it was hugely concerning that because of prejudice and discriminations the health of so many can be at risk.
