Exercise and chiropractor service best for back pain

A new study that was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine discovered that exercise and chiropractor service is a better relief for neck pain than traditional routes such as medication to treat the pain.

The study was conducted by the National Institute of Health and included 272 patients that all suffered from neck pain that was recent in onset. Each of the patients was treated with either a combination of medication, exercise, or by a chiropractor for a twelve week period after which those who had the later two treatments were twice as likely to be relieved from their pain over those that were simply medicated.

Those that were treated with the aid of a chiropractor found the most relief from pain with 32% of those in the study claiming they were now pain free and 30% of those who treated the problem with exercise were able to say that they were pain free at the close of the study. Those that were in the group treated with medication did not fare so well with only about 13% of these study participants claiming that they were now pain free.

Professor of family medicine from the University of Michigan Dr. Lee Green stated that the results are not surprising because neck and back pain are usually mechanical problems therefore it makes sense that a mechanical treatment would be the best solution as compared to a chemical solution.

The exercises that were included in the study were simple physical therapy exercises that were designed to be practiced at home and given to the patients in the study with a series of instructions and photos to help make it easier to follow the directions and complete the activity without the aid of a physical therapist on a regular basis.
