Diabetics at more risk than previously thought

People that have diabetes have a higher risk of suffering from fatal conditions then the rest of the population, according to new research that was published by the National Diabetes Audit. The results of the audit prove that diabetics have a much higher risk of fatal conditions such as angina, heart attack, and stroke then the rest. They are also at a higher risk of amputations.

The news from the National Diabetes Audit has caused authors to state that diabetes must be a top priority for healthcare providers. The audit took a look at over two million people that lived in Wales and England and found that out of those about 45,000 people had heart failure which is 65% more than what would occur within the general population.

The latest findings were standardized to look into the different accounts between diabetic andDiabet general populations. The results show that those who have diabetes are almost 50% likely to have a heart attack. Last year about 14,500 people with diabetes suffered from this complication of the disease, versus the expected 10,000 cases.

Heart attack is the not the only side effect that those with diabetes were likely to have, as sufferers were also found to have a 25% increased risk of stroke. Another 144% were more likely to end up on renal replacement therapy.

Finally, the audit reported that people who suffered from diabetes had a 40% increased risk of death compared to the general population. Last year there were about 66,000 deaths that die of diabetes complications whereas only 47,000 deaths were expected. Finally, it is estimated that there were as many as 23,000 excess deaths.
