NICE wants new cancer drugs available on NHS

Those who suffer from stomach or lung cancer will benefit from two new cancer treatments that are now available to those that live in the UK. NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) is recommending that the two new drugs be used and offered by the NHS.

The first drug is called Iressa and can be used in those with lung cancer caused from a genetic mutation. The manufacturer of the drug, AstraZeneca, will offer the drug to the NHS for £12,200 total for a full course of treatment regardless of the actual length of the treatment plan.

The Nice health technology evaluation centre director, Dr. Carole Longson, stated that lung cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers diagnosed in the UK with over 38,000 people facing the problem each year.  She added that non-small lung cancer is the cause of about 80% of all cases and the new addition of Iressa will give clinicians another option to consider when devising a treatment plan.

The second cancer drug is called Xeloda and will help those that suffer from stomach cancer.  The drug is actually a tablet that will allow patients to visit the hospital less frequently than they may under chemo treatment.

Iressa is also available in a tablet form allowing patients to regain some sense of normalcy while battling lung cancer.
