The report looked at over 380 trusts and discovered that chief executives earn almost seven times more than most nurses. The average NHS trusts senior manager earns around £147,500 according to the report.

The NHS Confederation approves the pay difference stating that top managers are needed in order to help them sort through financial challenges that arise.

However, many unions have questioned why managers get rises above inflation rates when ordinary workers most make do with significantly lower rises. However, the senior managers responded that the NHS trusts are very complicated to run with high budgets and thus the managers are paid accurately.

The highest paid executive included in the study was at the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in the City of London and earned a stunning £270,000.

A spokesman for the trust stated that their chief executive, Ron Kerr, offers the responsibility, experience, and expertise that the role requires and they are extremely pleased that he leads their organization. The spokesman added that since Guy’s and St Thomas’ is one of the most successful, complex, and largest NHS Foundation Trusts within the country.

According to the Department of Health, trusts are considered independent organizations and thus are able to set their own pay rates when it comes to senior pay.
