Fighting dementia is not an easy battle

If you see someone that is suffering from an injury or know someone that is engaged in a battle with a disease most likely you will offer to help in any way possible, however, when an elderly person is fighting dementia often they are placed in home care and seem to all but disappear from the radar of their loved one’s lives.

The Alzheimer’s Society and Saga Homecare have teamed up during Dementia Awareness Week to change this fact by making more people aware of the fact that dementia is just a brain disease and that those fighting it deserve just as much support as anyone else fighting a health battle.

In an effort to get the word out about dementia, and to dispel the myths that surround this debilitating brain disease that affects many people. The charity and the homecare organisation have released a 35 second video that briefly lists the top five facts about dementia. The aim of this is to remind people to ‘remember the person’ that is suffering from dementia and not just the disorder that they are suffering from, and to help people see just how important it is to engage fully with their loved ones.

The charm of the video is that it is a short clip that is easily shared with friends and family members so that you can help spread the word about what can be done about dementia and how to help your loved ones. Some useful titbits from the video include the fact that dementia is not just something that happens as you age, and the fact that it is a real disease that commonly occurs in the form of Alzheimer’s.

Other useful facts include the fact that you can live with dementia and still have a happy life, so the 61% of the population that admit they are worried about dementia should find some consolation in knowing that it is at treatable disease if diagnosed properly.
